Syphilis is rising again — what that means for you

Syphilis cases in the UK are at their highest level in decades. The early signs are easy to miss.

Stages of infection Syphilis usually starts as a small painless sore that heals on its own. Weeks later a rash can appear, often on the palms or soles. The infection can then stay silent for years while still causing harm.

Why the painless sore matters Because the first sore does not hurt and disappears without treatment, many people never realise they were infected.

Testing Blood tests look for antibodies to the bacteria that cause syphilis. Antibodies can stay in your blood after treatment, so results are always interpreted by a clinician alongside your history.

Treatment Syphilis is treated effectively with antibiotics, usually penicillin. The earlier it is treated, the simpler treatment is.
