How to talk to a partner about testing

Bringing up STI testing is easier with a plan. These approaches keep the conversation calm.

Pick the moment Have the conversation somewhere private and unhurried, not in the middle of intimacy.

Make it mutual Framing it as something you both do — "I test regularly, shall we both check?" — removes any suggestion of blame.

Keep it factual Most STIs have no symptoms, so testing is routine health admin rather than an accusation.

If a result is positive Recent partners need to know so they can test too. Sexual health clinics can contact partners anonymously on your behalf if that feels easier.

This article is general health information and does not replace professional medical advice. If you have symptoms, or a result you are unsure about, speak to a doctor, GP or sexual health clinic.
