The window period, explained simply
Testing too soon can miss an infection. The window period is why.
What the window period is After exposure, it takes time before an infection can be detected. During that gap, a test can be negative even though an infection is present.
Rough guide The window varies by infection and by test. It can be days for some bacterial infections and several weeks for antibody-based tests such as HIV and syphilis.
What that means in practice If your exposure was very recent, a negative result is not the end of the story. Testing again later, or asking a sexual health clinic when to test, is the safer approach.
When symptoms are present Symptoms always deserve professional advice, no matter what a home test shows.
This article is general health information and does not replace professional medical advice. If you have symptoms, or a result you are unsure about, speak to a doctor, GP or sexual health clinic.
