What gonorrhoea is

Gonorrhoea is a bacterial infection spread through unprotected vaginal, oral or anal sex and by sharing sex toys. It can affect the genitals, rectum and throat.

Symptoms

According to the NHS, many people do not get symptoms. When they do, symptoms can include thick green or yellow discharge, pain when urinating, and in women bleeding between periods.

Treatment and follow-up

Gonorrhoea is treated by a healthcare professional, usually with an antibiotic injection. Because antibiotic resistance is a growing concern, clinics may recommend a follow-up test. It should not be self-treated.
