When should you consider getting tested?

Consider testing after a new partner, unprotected sex, or if a partner has an STI. See a clinician if you have symptoms.

Educational information, not medical advice. If you have symptoms, are pregnant, or are worried about a recent exposure, contact a GP, pharmacist or NHS sexual health clinic. In an emergency call 999; for urgent advice call NHS 111.

CareFree Kits is a private service and is not affiliated with or operated by the NHS.

Situations where testing is sensible

The NHS suggests testing if you have had unprotected sex, a new or multiple partners, or a partner who has an STI or symptoms. Many people also test as part of routine self-care, for example before stopping condom use with a new partner.

Timing

Some infections take time to become detectable. Kit instructions explain how long to wait after possible exposure. Testing too early can give a negative result that needs repeating.

When to go straight to a clinic

Seek clinical care rather than a home test if you have symptoms, are pregnant, may have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours, or have been told a partner has an infection.
